Maia Bănărescu, Children's Rights Ombudsperson will monitor the situation in Prison no. 10, Goian

On the 8 of June, Maia Bănărescu, Children's Ombudspersonand Svetlana Rusu, Head of the Investigation and Monitoring Department of the Ombudsman Institution, visited the Penitentiary No. 10 Goian, where clashes between the institution's staff and a group of minors were reported.

Maia Bănărescu discussed with the adolescents involved in the incident and the prison administration. The Ombudsperson urged the authoritiesto intervene in case of  riots in accordance with legal norms and documenting injuries,granting medical assistance and relocation of minors in rooms meeting the requirements.

The Ombudsperson has warned of the importance of respecting the rights of juveniles in detention to food, extra schedule activities, but also behavior assessment and implementation of a balanced system of sanctions and incentives oriented towards the specific needs and understanding minors.

The Ombudsperson also stressed the importance of activities to prevent similar incidents, and training the staff to follow the rules of intervention.

Children's Rights Ombudsperson - Maia Bănărescu will continue to monitor the rights of juveniles in detention facilities.
