On 21 October 2013, the Parliamentary Advocate Tudor Lazăr, participated in the meeting on developments in the field of non-discrimination, organized by the UN OHCHR and Soros Foundation Moldova.
The event was also attended by representatives of the Council on preventing and overcoming discrimination, ensurement of equality, NGOs in the field.
In his speech the Parliamentary Advocate said that the adoption of the Law on ensuring equality and creating a specialized body to combat discrimination were possible thanks to the joint efforts of those present at the meeting. The Ombudsman noted the existence an effective cooperation with many of the meeting participants for the settlement of human rights issues.
Tudor Lazar emphasized that the CHRM not only monitors the situation regarding the observance of human rights, ensure of equality and non-discrimination, and reacts when these rights are violated, requesting competent authorities to put an end to discriminatory actions. So, the Parliamentary Advocate reacted, for example, in the case where some politicians have made statements of a discriminatory nature towards some people or even an ethnic minority. Following the Ombudsman intervention, were administratively sanctioned persons who have placed announcements with offensive character to a sexual minority. Also the Parliamentary Advocate addressed in the court to defend the rights of some minorities, and in the Constitutional Court regarding the gender equality.
Several actions of CHRM were focused on promotion of equality, diversity and tolerance, combat of any kind of discrimination.
However the Parliamentary Advocate mentioned that, unfortunately, currently the values of tolerance, equality and mutual respect, regardless the ethnic belonging, religion or sex, or other criteria are not shared by all members of the society.
