On 24 October 2013, the Center for Human Rights of Moldova was visited by professor Gerard de Jonge from Maastricht University (Netherlands), Council of Europe expert. The expert will conduct an assessment of the effectiveness of the ill-treatment complaints mechanism within the penitentiary institutions of the Republic of Moldova. The visit is organized in the framework of the regional Joint Programme between the European Union ant the Council of Europe entitled Reinforcing the fight against ill-treatment and impunity”.
During the meeting with the employees of the CHRM and the members of the Consultative Board, that in common ensures the functioning of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture, Gerard de Jonge was informed about the NPM activity, were offered details of the parliamentary advocate attributions, procedures in resolving complaints received from inmates.
Based on the information collected following the meetings and consultations with representatives of the relevant authorities, officials of the criminal justice system, which will take place from October 24 to 25, will be performed a report with findings and recommendations. That will be presented and discussed with the authorities and stake holders during a roundtable on December 3, 2013.
