A meeting of CHRM Director, Anatolie Munteanu with Jose Luis Herrero, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chişinău.

Director of the CHRM,welcomed the presence of Jose Luis Herrero, in Chişinău, expressing hope that during his term of office as a Head of the Council of Europe Office in our country it will be very beneficial for developing and boosting the CoE relations with the National Ombudsman Office and for strengthening of national institution of human rights protection.

Jose Luis Herrero mentioned that the strengthening of the National Ombudsman Office, implicitly ensuring the human rights and fundamental freedoms compliance in Moldova was and will remain one of the priority directions of the Council of Europe Mission in Chişinău activity. European official noted among other objectives of the Council of Europe Office in Chişinău, the implementation of actions for confidence building between the two sides of Nistru river, mentioning that the National Ombudsman Institution suggestions regarding the improvement modalities of this project will be exceedingly valuable.

Director of CHRM highly appreciated the partnership established between the institution of human rights protection and the Council of Europe Office in Moldova, highlighting among the results of this cooperation the recent documentation visit of a group of CHRM employees in Strasbourg, publishing of valuable handbooks “Handbook of a public servant in the field of human rights” and “Human rights and disability issue” within the Council of Europe joint program with the European Union "Democracy Support in Moldova".

Anatolie Munteanu also stressed that ombudsmen had full support from the Council of Europe Office in Chişinău team in promoting of various projects and initiatives, including the opinions formation on the draft law on the people’s advocate. The CHRM director expressed his regret at the fact that in the adoption of the respective Law were not taken into account neither opinions of the parliamentary advocates neither the Council of Europe experts, among which was a well known expert in the field of human rights - Mark Novitsky.

Anatolie Munteanu mentioned that CHRM pleads for the improvement of the People’s advocate Law, which contains several serious gaps capable to affect the future people’s advocates activity. The Ombudsman also pointed out the moment priorities of CHRM, taking into account the current situation in the field of human rights observance in our country.

Director of CHRM wished success to Mr. Herrero during his mandate exercise as a Head of Council of Europe Office in Chişinău, on his turn the official from Strasbourg expressed readiness for a close and effective cooperation with ombudsmen and staff of the national institution for human rights protection.
