During 22-30 June, People’s Advocate Office will conduct a campaign to combat torture on the occasion of the International Day of Support of Victims of Torture, which is marked on June 26.
The campaign will include a press conference (June 23, Infotag, 11.00), a direct intervention in national morning show on national radio (23 June at 09.20-09.40), a interactive broadcast show on radio Plai (24 June 10.00-11-00 time), distribution of anti-torture spots at this station, as well as several regional television stations.
Employees of People’s Advocate Representative Offices will gives lectures on this topic at the Police Inspectorates from Ceadîr Lunga, Taraclia and Comrat, penitentiaries no. 1 and no. 5 from Taraclia and Cahul.
On June 26 the International Day of Support of Victims of Torture, Ombudsman Institution will organize a roundtable with participation of the DPI, heads of penitentiares in the country, representatives of the General Prosecutor Office
At the meeting will be present the director of RCTV "Memoria" Ludmila Popovici, who will refer to the state's obligation to ensure rehabilitation of torture victims under the UN Convention against torture and other punishments or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
The slogan of International Day of Support of Victims of Torture in current year is "Rehabilitation is a right!".
In the current year Ombudsman institution is at the 4th edition of the company for combating torture.In Republic of Moldova, the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) was established in 2007 under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
Function of National Preventive Mechanism entrusted to the ombudsman from Republic of Moldova. According to the the above mentioned Convention and under Law no. 52, near the Ombudsman's Office is created a Council for the Prevention of Torture as a national mechanism of torture prevention, the People’s advocate Office being ex officio Chairman of the Board.
Since the beginning of the NPM activity in Moldova so far have been conducted over 1,000 visits to places where are held or may be held persons deprived of liberty, these visits aiming at preventing maltreatment and make recommendations designed to improve the situation of persons that are in state custody.
