On August 11th, 2016, the People’s Advocate Mihail Cotorobai, met the newly appointed Political-Economic Officer of the US Embassy in Moldova, Michael Ruhsenberger.
At the meeting, the Ombudsman spoke about the achievements, challenges and obstacles to the realization of human rights in our country, through perspective of the Study „Perceptions of human rights in the Republic of Moldova in 2016”, elaborated for the Office of the Ombudsman. During the discussion, Mihail Cotorobai stressed the importance of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) and the Ombudsman's role in the prevention and fight against torture.
The parties discussed the alignment of the national legislation in the field of human rights protection at the international level, the Office of the Ombudsman acting as guarantor in this regard.The portfolio of activities of the Political-Economic Officer of the US Embassy in the Republic of Moldova includes the sphere of human rights, human trafficking and the rights of minorities. Therefore, Michael Ruhsenberger expressed willingness to cooperate with the Ombudsman's institution in order to identify solutions to prevent human rights violations.
