On February 28, inst., the members of the consultative group under the chargé for human rights in Tiraspol metat the office of the Varnita Representative Office of the Ombudsperson Institution, within the first meeting of 2016. The meeting was chaired by the head of the Varnita Representative Office,VeaceslavUrsu, focusing on the “Mechanisms for human rights promotion in the Transnistrian region and documentation of the acts of abuse and torture”.

Within the event, the possibilities for cooperation between the councils for prevention of torture comprised of representatives of the civil society from both sides of the Dniester River, as well as the difficulties that might arise in this contextwere addressed.

The member of the consultative group, LuizaDoroşenco, welcomed the initiative and the efforts of the Ombudsperson, MihailCotorobai, and the chargé for human rights from Tiraspol, Vasile Calico, in fighting torture in the Transnistrian Region.

It should be mentioned that the prevention and fighting of torture and ill-treatment was one of the topics discussed on December 29, 2015 during the meeting of the Ombudsman, MihailCotorobai, and the chargé for human rights from Tiraspol, Vasile Calico. Within that meeting, the two sides agreed on the cooperation of the consultative councils from Chisinau and from Tiraspol for the prevention and fighting of torture.
