The Ombudsperson's Office: Domestic violence kills and destroys human fates. In the past 4 years 117 women were killed or driven to commit suicide as a result of domestic violence.

The Ombudsperson’s Institution warns that domestic violence is a serious violation of human rights and pleads for firm combating of this phenomenon.

According to GPI statistics, during the period between 2012 and 10 months of the current year, 104 women were murdered by their life partners and 13 were driven to commit suicide; 23 women committed murders as a result of domestic violence and currently are serving their punishment in penitentiary institutions. GPI data show an increasing trend in the number of serious crimes against lives and health committed in the Republic of Moldova from 63 cases in 2008 to 2270 cases in 2014 and respectively, 1604 in 10 months of 2015. Behind these figures there is the drama of family members, who directly or indirectly became victims of domestic violence, regardless who are they - husband, wife, unmarried partner, children, relatives.

The Ombudsperson’s Office warns that domestic violence is a serious violation of human rights and pleads for firm actions aimed at rooting out this phenomenon. To raise public awareness of domestic violence and violence against women and inform people about the legal mechanisms for protection and rehabilitation of domestic violence victims, the Ombudsperson’s Office will join the International Campaign entitled “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”, launched today, 25 November.

For the second consecutive year, the Campaign for Combating Domestic Violence and Violence Against Women will be carried out by the partners of Ombudsperson's Office, Center for Rehabilitation of Trafficked Victims and Promo-Lex Association. This year RCTV Memoria will also join the activities organized by the Ombudsperson’s Institution. The mobile teams of employees of Ombudsperson's Office and representatives of the Campaign partners, consisting of both legal specialists and psychologists, will travel to some rural localities in order to meet the inhabitants and inform them about types of violence, characteristic elements of domestic violence, its consequences and possibilities for protection and rehabilitation of victims. Sector police officers, medical staff, social workers, teachers from the village. Thus, on 25 November, at 2:00 pm the mobile team will go to Gura Bicului village, Anenii Noi district, on 26 November, at 2:00 pm - to Mereni village from the same district, on 1 December, at 5:00 pm - Ghidighici village.

On 3 December, the employees of Ombudsperson's Office will meet with sector police officers from Straseni district, on 11 December - with sector police officers from Ialoveni district, on 17 December - with sector police officers from Criuleni district, on 26 November - with sector police officers from ATUG to discuss the role and duties of sector police officer in combating domestic violence and protecting the victims of domestic violence.

The Office’ employees will hold a lecture on domestic violence at the Pedagogic College of Comrat and lectures on school violence in a number of educational institutions.
